Day 8: FEATURE ARTICLES
PROCEDURE:
1.Hold up the front page of the newspaper and ask what they notice first. Answers will be the headlines, the name of newspaper, photographs, stories that are boxed in. These “boxed in” stories are feature articles.
2.Discuss the following, putting the definition of feature article (a and b) on the board. You may want to summarize the information in c, d, e, and f and put it on the board).
Feature:
a.Feature as a verb means to give special promotion to an article, story, or department in a newspaper or magazine.
b.A feature (noun) is an article, story, or department in a newspaper or magazine that is displayed, advertised, or presented as a special attraction.
c.Feature writing is different than regular news writing (called “hard” news) in that it has a “softer” approach and is included for entertainment, inspiration, and good reading rather than to merely inform. Feature stories are often called human interest stories.
d.A feature story is often set apart from the rest of the page by boxing it in, thus catching the reader’s eye more quickly.
e.Photo features are pictures of human interest, boxed in, with information given in the caption (called the “cutline” in newspaper language) beneath the photo.
f.Features can be interspersed throughout the newspaper, although smaller newspapers will put them on the front page. Also, the different sections of the newspaper, such as sports section or travel section, may include feature stories, also.
